With Sametime 8.0, the installation scripts have to run successfully to provision the client. Unfortunately there are a couple of issues in the scripts that did not show up on RHEL/SLED testing but do cause problems when using alien to install on ubuntu. If all of your users use the -i option with alien to install (with --scripts) they would then each have to fix the scripts and then use something like apt-get -f install ... to fix the problem. Were you planning to use alien to create a deb, unpack it, fix the scripts, repack it, and distribute the deb to your users?
